COLLOIDAL SILVER FAQ
A big controversy over the question of whether "colloidal" silver,
"mild silver protein" or "ionic" silver is best can be answered
in two parts. Both silvers have good and useful qualities. Older
chemistry books make no distinction between the colloidal and
ionic states of the electro-colloidal metals. THE KEY IS SMALLEST
PARTICLES AVAILABLE, 0.001 microns in diameter or smaller.
There is some differences of opinion concerning the appearance
of the "yellow" color. Some people have said that "yellow is
bad", "silver isn't yellow", "yellow is sulfur contamination",
"yellow is iron contamination". In the book, Practical Colloid
Chemistry, on page 69, the following statements are found: "The
continuous change in colour from yellow to blue corresponds
to a change in the absorption maximum of the shorter to longer
wave-lengths with a decreasing degree of dispersion. This is
a general phenomenon in colloid chemistry illustrating the relation
between colour and degree of dispersion." This section goes
on to describe the colors that show up in a wide variety of
colloidal metal solutions. They ALL have a yellow phase. For
true "electro-colloidal" silver, the particle size range that
can appear yellow is .01 to .001 microns (10 to 100 angstroms)
because that is the size of silver particle that best absorbs
the indigo light, leaving only its inverse color, yellow, to
be observed. The final transparent-yellow appearance only shows
up after the particles have become evenly dispersed.
Several forces can strip the charge off the particles and will
degrade the quality of the colloidal silver by a process called
re-coagulation, where the particles clump together again to
form larger aggregates. Ultraviolet light from the sun and many
plastics can cause this process to occur. Therefore, colloidal
silver is best stored in dark, glass containers. Preferable
containers that are suitable to prevent re-coagulation are dark
amber and the cobalt blue bottles.
PPM (Part per million) When measuring weight per volume of water,
one liter of water weighs 1000 grams, and one milligram is one
thousandth (1/1000) of a gram, so 1 mg/L is the same as 1 ppm.
One teaspoon of 30 ppm colloidal silver has about 150 mcg (micrograms)
of silver in it.
The Environmental Protection Agency has, for health purposes
established a daily reference dose for silver in drinking water
at 350 micrograms (u.g) and a critical dose at 1400 u.g. In
contrast, international health bodies, such as the World Health
Organization, have not established such standards for silver
since its toxicity is very low. But lets assume that the EPA
reference dose is a truly conservative guideline that will maintain
a high degree of safety. Then we should not blithely exceed
this level. Colloidal silver preparations are measured in parts
per million (ppm). How can parts per million be converted to
u.g? One teaspoon containing Colloidial Silver at a concentration
of 30 ppm equals 150 u.g. Thus even if Colloidial Silver were
to be used as frequently as 7 times per day, it would only then
approach the EPA reference dose and still be well below the
critical dose. For most consumers, such uses are only for a
short period during the acute phase of illness.
Today, most Health Food Stores carry and sell several brands
of colloidal silver It is still possible to spend as much as
$10/oz. for colloidal silver in Health Food Stores, or as low
as $5/oz. Some mail order catalogs sell it for as little as
$2.50/oz.
Silver used to produce colloidal silver needs to be 99.999 percent
pure silver. Less than 99.999 such as 99.99 percent could leave
you with as much as 10 ppm of impurities in such as Copper,
Lead, Iron, Bismuth, Other impurities such as Sodium, Calcium,
Manganese, Potassium, and Magnesium will usually show up not
in the silver but unpure water to make the silver water.
Prices are coming down because of the home devices that allow
people to make their own colloidal silver. The cottage industry
of colloidal silver generators is starting to have an effect
the larger market. A major commercial manufacturer of colloidal
silver has recently issued a warning statement to its customers,
alerting them to the dangers of the "inferior quality" of colloidal
silver made by these devices. CNN and other major media have
also tried to scare the public away from colloidal silver by
showing a blue-skinned person who "suffers" from Argyria, a
cosmetic condition caused by the build-up of silver compounds
under the skin. This condition is from a very high ppm of ionic
silver. Even JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association)
has run articles warning of Argyria and the toxicities associated
with "colloidal silver proteins." January 16, 1997, new labeling
guidelines concerning colloidal silver went into effect, issued
by the FDA. Other FDA rulings on "safety and effectiveness"
are still pending. The first thing people need to know is that
there are at least FOUR different products on the market being
called COLLOIDAL SILVER.
